Residents and road users in Calabar have been advised to brace for temporary traffic disruptions as the Cross River State Carnival Commission announces the grand finale of ‘NKOT MBOK Efik’, Efut and Qua; a major cultural highlight of the Carnival Calabar and festival calendar.
In a public announcement issued by the Commission and signed by the Executive Secretary Austin Cobham, the colourful finale is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 31 January, 2026, within the Calabar metropolis.
The event is expected to draw large crowds as cultural troupes parade through major streets, culminating in a grand display at the Governor’s VVIP Booth on Mary Slessor Avenue.
According to the notice, the cultural carnival route will be temporarily shut down between 10:00AM and 3:00PM to allow for a smooth and secure procession.
The roads affected by the closure include Millennium Park through Mary Slessor Avenue, extending into IBB Way, and returning back to Millennium Park.
The Commission has appealed to residents, commuters and motorists to make use of alternative routes, which will be provided to ease movement during the event period.
“All participants are requested to adhere strictly to the guidelines, terms and conditions already issued by the NKOT MBOK Development Initiative,” the statement added, stressing the importance of orderliness and compliance for a successful celebration.
While regretting any inconvenience the temporary road closures may cause, the Carnival Commission emphasized that the measures are necessary to ensure public safety and the success of the cultural spectacle.
The NKOT MBOK Grand Finale is one of the flagship cultural events celebrating the heritage, unity and traditions of the Efik, Efut and Qua people, reinforcing Cross River State’s reputation as Nigeria’s tourism and cultural capital.
