Cross River: Mob Set Ablaze Suspected Transformer Vandal, Woman Dies In Road Crash

By Kelvin Ololo

A suspected case of jungle justice in Calabar has left an unidentified man dead after he was allegedly set ablaze by a mob over claims of transformer vandalism.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m. along Palm Street by Target Junction in Calabar.

Preliminary information by the police indicates that the man, whose identity has not yet been established, was allegedly caught attempting to vandalize a power transformer in the area. He was reportedly apprehended by a mob and burnt to death before the arrival of security operatives.

The Police Public Relations Officer ASP Sunday Eitokpah confirmed that a patrol team was quickly mobilized to the scene upon receiving information about the incident. On arrival, officers discovered the burnt corpse lying in front of the transformer.

Items recovered at the scene included an old model electricity meter box, a piece of copper wire, and electric cables believed to be vandalized materials.

Authorities have since contacted the relevant Local Government authorities and Environmental Health Services to evacuate the corpse from the scene.

In a reaction to the development, the Police condemned the mob action, describing jungle justice as illegal and unacceptable. The Command advised members of the public to always hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Police further disclosed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved in the mob action, promising that further updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses.

Meanwhile, in a separate tragic incident, a woman has been reportedly knocked down and killed by a commercial driver while attempting to cross the road at Lemna Junction in Calabar.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the woman was crossing the busy junction and was struck by a speeding commercial vehicle.

Drivers operating around the area alleged that the location has recorded several accidents in the past due to the sharp bending near the junction, which often limits visibility for motorists.

According to some of the drivers, the road design has made the area particularly dangerous for pedestrians attempting to cross.

“This bend is very risky. Vehicles approach the junction at speed, and pedestrians cannot see clearly when crossing. Many accidents have happened here,” one driver said.

Following the incident, motorists and residents have called on the Cross River State Government to urgently intervene by constructing a pedestrian walkover at the location.

They appealed to Governor Bassey Otu to consider the request as a long-term safety measure to prevent further loss of lives at the junction.

Residents warned that unless proactive steps are taken to address the danger posed by the road bend and the absence of pedestrian infrastructure, more accidents could occur in the area.
