Troops of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, under the operational command of Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army, says arms runners identified as Sunday Ayam and Afriday Augustus have been arrested in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Headquarters of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Major Yemi Sokoya disclosed this in a press release in Calabar.
He said the operational breakthrough is in the ongoing security operations in Obubra LGA, as part of sustained efforts to consolidate earlier successes recorded against armed criminal elements in Odonget Community.
Major Yemi said the latest development follows the recent neutralization of five armed criminals and the discovery and destruction of an illegal gun manufacturing facility in the Odonget general area during exploitation operations conducted by troops after an ambush on security personnel responding to a communal crisis.

He noted that in continuation of these operations aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action, troops conducting a stop-and-search operation at the Obubra Checkpoint at about 12: 58 pm on 13 March, 2026, where the troops intercepted and arrested the two suspects.
Major Sokoya averred that the suspects were found in possession of 192 rounds of Norinco and 223 Remington ammunition, commonly used with AK-pattern rifles.

According to him, preliminary assessments indicate that the suspects and the recovered ammunition may be linked to the ongoing hostilities around the Odonget general area.
“The suspects are currently in custody, while investigations have commenced to determine the source of the ammunition, its intended destination, and the suspects’ possible involvement in the recent security disturbances,” he said.

The 13 Brigade Spokesman said the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, has commended the vigilance and professionalism of the troops, noting that the arrest further demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the area.
He reassured residents that troops will continue to sustain aggressive operations, checkpoints, and patrols across the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility to prevent the movement of illegal arms and ensure lasting peace and security.

Brigadier General Patrick enjoined Cross Riverians to remain law-abiding and continue to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that will assist ongoing efforts to apprehend criminals and sustain the prevailing peace in the area.
