Cross River Chief Judge’s Daughter Joy Ikpeme, Elevated To Federal High Court Judge

By Kelvin Ololo

Justice Joy Bassey Ikpeme, daughter of Cross River Chief Judge, Akon Bassey Ikpeme, is among 14 newly appointed judges approved to strengthen the Federal High Court bench nationwide.

She was formally sworn in in Abuja by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, following her appointment earlier announced in February 2026.

Before her elevation, Justice Ikpeme served as an Assistant Director in the Cross River State Ministry of Justice, where she built a reputation within legal circles for administrative competence and public service.

Her appointment followed recommendations by the National Judicial Council after its 110th meeting in January 2026. According to judicial sources, the nomination process was cleared after security screenings returned no adverse findings.

Taking oath of office, she swore to discharge her duty diligently, abide by the code of her profession and pledge total allegiance to the Constitution of the Federation Republic of Nigeria.

Justice Joy swore not to allow her status and position to influence her judgement; pledging to discharge her duty without bias.

The elevation is seen as part of a broader effort to expand the Federal High Court and improve the efficiency of justice delivery across Nigeria, amid increasing caseloads and demand for judicial reforms.

For Cross River State, her appointment not only reinforces its presence on the national judicial stage but also continues a legacy of legal service, linking two generations of the Ikpeme family within Nigeria’s judiciary.
