Cross River Confirms Suspected COVID-19 Case

By Kelvin Ololo

A suspected case of COVID-19 in Cross River State has shifted attention from reassurance to risk, highlighting how quickly a single imported infection could test the state’s ability to prevent another outbreak.

The state government confirmed that a Chinese national has been isolated at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) after presenting symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

The patient is currently under observation as health officials intensify efforts to contain any possible spread.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed that the individual arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before travelling to Cross River en route to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area. He said symptoms were first detected at a clinic in the area, raising concerns about possible exposure before isolation.

Although authorities say response measures were promptly activated, the case underscores a recurring public health concern between the window of arrival, symptom detection, and isolation of the patient.

The state has since initiated contact tracing and other containment protocols in collaboration with the Nigeria Center for Disease Control. Officials maintain that the situation is under control, but experts warn that early-stage complacency has historically contributed to wider outbreaks.

Since the global spread of COVID-19 in early 2020, public health responses have relied heavily on rapid detection and strict isolation. Any delay, especially involving travelers and high-mobility environments, can increase the risk of community transmission.

Residents have been advised to observe basic safety measures, including hand hygiene and early reporting of symptoms, as officials work to ensure that what is currently an isolated case does not develop into a wider public health challenge.
