Fire Destroys Magistrate Court In Cross River, Police Launch Investigation

By Kelvin Ololo

A Magistrate Court in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State has been completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Thursday, leaving critical legal documents and case files in ashes.

The incident, which affected Magistrate Court 1, reportedly occurred around 3:00 a.m on April 23, 2026, as flames engulfed the facility and razed the structure entirely before emergency response could contain the situation.

Sources told CrossRiverWatch that the inferno consumed court records, exhibits, and ongoing case files, a development with far-reaching legal implications for pending matters within the jurisdiction.

“One could only see ash and debris. Everything was completely destroyed,” a source said, noting that the fire spread rapidly and left the court in ruins.

The destruction effectively leaves Ikom without a functional magistrate court, a situation observers say mirrors existing challenges in neighbouring jurisdictions where access to lower courts has been disrupted.

Legal practitioners warn that the loss of case files may affect the continuity of proceedings, potentially leading to delays, retrials, or, in extreme cases, miscarriage of justice where records cannot be reconstructed.

Another source disclosed that senior security and judicial officials, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the Area Commander, representatives of the Fire Service, correctional authorities, members of the bench, and executives of the Bar, visited the scene shortly after the incident.

Confirming the development to CrossRiverWatch, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the incident is being treated as a suspected case of arson. He noted that the prompt response of officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Ikom, in collaboration with Fire Service personnel, helped to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

According to him, although the court structure was completely destroyed, no lives were lost. He added that the Commissioner of Police has directed a discreet and thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant agencies to determine the actual cause of the fire and identify those responsible.

The incident has reignited concerns over the state of judicial infrastructure in Cross River, with stakeholders pointing to alleged neglect of court facilities and the broader justice system.
