Faulty Transformer Leaves Calabar Community In Darkness For 18 Months

By Bright Effiong

Residents of Mayne Avenue by Ephraim Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, have appealed for urgent intervention over a faulty transformer that has left the community without power supply since January 2025.

A visit to the area revealed that the prolonged blackout has disrupted residential and business activities, with many residents relying on generators despite the high cost of petrol.

Speaking to our Reporter, a resident David Daniel recalled that the community enjoyed a brief restoration of electricity following the intervention of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong who represents Cross River South Senatorial District, in December 2024.

“Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong promised to help us, and within about three weeks the transformer was repaired and electricity was restored. Unfortunately, it developed another fault shortly afterwards, and we have been living in darkness again. We are appealing for another intervention because the situation is becoming unbearable,” David said.

The Community Chairman Mr. Paul Bassey, said the recurring transformer fault has continued to affect businesses, students and families in the area.

“We appreciate Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong for his earlier intervention, but the transformer has developed another fault,” he said, appealing to the electricity distribution company and other relevant authorities to provide a lasting solution by repairing or replacing the transformer.

Residents expressed hope that their appeal would receive prompt attention, noting that restoring electricity to Mayne Avenue by Ephraim Street would improve business activities, enhance security and ease the hardship faced by the community.
