UNICAL Sacks 8 Staff, Sanction 1 Over Misconduct

By Patrick Obia

The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has dismissed eight members of staff and sanctioned another following various cases of alleged misconduct.

The decisions were contained in a memo issued by the Office of the Registrar on July 17, 2026, detailing disciplinary actions approved at the university’s 174th Governing Council meeting held on July 3, 2026.

The memo, signed by the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, stated that the disciplinary measures were approved after the Governing Council considered reports of the various cases.

According to the memo, Professor Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science was dismissed over alleged examination misconduct.

Dr. Mathias Agba, also of the Department of Nursing Science, was found negligent in the handling of an alleged examination misconduct case. Rather than dismissal, the council approved a two-year delay in his promotion and ordered the forfeiture of 50 percent of his withheld salary.

The Council also dismissed Mr. Emmanuel Adariku of the UNICAL Alumni Relations Office over alleged unauthorized withdrawals from “The Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Fund” account.

Three other academic staff, Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Mrs. Akinrinade Opeyemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology, and Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine were dismissed for alleged abandonment of duty.

Similarly, Mr. Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department was fired over the alleged vandalization and carting away of armoured cables, while Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel lost her job for alleged absence and abandonment of duty.

Also dismissed was Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry over the alleged falsification and alteration of examination results.

The university said the decisions form part of efforts to uphold discipline, accountability and integrity within the institution.
