UNICROSS: Governor Otu Pledges Greater Support, Sets To Meet Striking Lecturers

By Sylvia Akpan

The Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Otu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the continued growth and development of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), promising improved infrastructure and sustained engagement with stakeholders to address the institution’s current challenges.

The Governor gave the assurance on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, during a meeting with the University’s Management and the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the Governor’s Office.

Leading the UNICROSS delegation, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, lauded the Governor for granting the audience and for his unwavering support for the university. She explained that the visit provided an opportunity for students to interact directly with the Governor on issues affecting the institution and appealed for continued government intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the SUG President, Comrade Favour Ogar, appreciated the Governor for his consistent support for UNICROSS, particularly his appointment of Prof. Francisca Bassey as Vice Chancellor and his intervention following the recent road accident involving some students of the university.

Responding, Governor Otu commended the Vice Chancellor and the University Management for their dedication to the growth of the institution despite existing challenges. He noted that he was already aware of all the challenges of the University because the Vice Chancellor had earlier briefed him on the issues and assured the delegation of his administration’s commitment to addressing them.

The Governor disclosed that the Vice Chancellor had already applied for additional vehicles for the university and assured the delegation that new vehicles would soon be provided.

He also revealed that the VC had informed him about the condition of the University’s Medical Center and promised that the facility would be equipped to perform optimally.

Otu stated that he had been informed about the need to improve the university’s road network and assured the delegation that his administration would look into the request.

He called on all stakeholders in UNICROSS to make the necessary sacrifices for the continued growth and development of the university and announced that he would soon meet with the industrial unions in the institution as part of ongoing efforts to address their concerns.
