The Cross River State Police Command has rescued a man suspected of stealing a mobile phone from jungle justice in Calabar.
Jungle justice is an unlawful practice carried out by angry mobs with an intention to harm or kill the suspect accused of committing a particular crime without handing him or her to the law enforcement agencies for trial and prosecution.
Chukwu Ebuka could have breath his last if not for the salvation of policemen who rescued him from the hands of irate youths near Harbour Junction on Tuesday September 1, 2026 over alleged phone theft.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, a police patrol team was deployed to the scene following a distress call.
He was rescued and evacuated to an undisclosed clinic for treatment from multiple injuries.
A 56-year-old man Azubike Micheal was arrested for spearheading the attack.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested over deadly stabbing and death of 20-year-old Uwem Daniel Akpan at Peters Street, Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.
The police said the incident occurred at about 7:30 PM following a misunderstanding between the victim and the suspect.
The victim was rushed to the Naval Reference Hospital, Calabar, for medical attention but was confirmed dead. His remains were subsequently recovered by his family.
According to the police, the suspect is currently in custody, while the case is being processed for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Calabar for further investigation and appropriate legal action, the statement noted.
The Police Command cautioned residents against taking the law into their hands, urging them to hand suspects over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution. The members of the public are enjoined to promptly report suspected criminal activities and emergencies to the police.
