The Cross River State Police Command has clarified that no murder case has been established against two persons arrested in connection with an alleged killing in Afokang Community, Calabar South Local Government Area of the state, despite widespread reports circulating on social media.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, who said investigations are still ongoing to determine the true circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the police, information was received at the Mbukpa Police Division on June 8, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m. from a correctional officer that members of the community had apprehended two individuals suspected of being linked to a murder incident.
The suspects, identified as Ofofon Philip, 34, and Offiong Promise, 23, were subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
ASP Eitokpah said police officers visited the scene following the report and took the suspects into custody for questioning.
He explained that preliminary investigations, including a search of the area where the alleged incident was said to have occurred, did not uncover any corpse or direct evidence of a homicide.
According to the statement, traces of blood were discovered around a soak away pit at the location. However, one of the suspects reportedly claimed that the blood was linked to a previous injury sustained on his leg. Police said the claim remains part of the ongoing investigation.
The Command stressed that, based on findings so far, no murder charge has been established against the suspects.
“The Command wishes to state categorically that, as of the time of this release, no case of murder has been established against the two suspects in our custody,” the statement read.
Police added that the matter is currently being investigated as a case of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace while detectives continue efforts to ascertain whether any criminal offence was committed.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, has directed a thorough and discreet investigation to establish the facts and ensure that any person found culpable is dealt with in accordance with the law.
The development follows growing public attention generated by online reports alleging a murder in the community.
The Command urged members of the public, journalists, bloggers and social media users to verify information through official channels before publication, warning that the spread of unverified reports could heighten tension and create unnecessary anxiety within affected communities.
