Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University, Calabar Branch have elected a new Executive headed by Dr. Tony E. Eyang to pilot the affairs of the Union for the next two years.
A free and fair elections held at the Chinua Achebe New Art Theatre, UNICAL, recently, saw Dr. Tony E. Eyang of the Department of English. and Literary Studies, overwhelmingly elected with 294 votes to become the new ASUU-UNICAL Chairman, taking over from his departmental colleague, Dr. James Okpiliya who had successful led the Union for two consecutive terms.
The ASUU-UNICAL top position which was contested by three academic doctors, equally saw Dr. Chris Eden of the Department of Chemistry, come second with 129 votes, while Dr. Ukeme Isaac of the Department of Vocational and Special Education garnered 38 votes.
Speaking after his election, Dr. Eyang said that the main thrust of his administration will be welfare of members, and that he was going to follow the footsteps of his predecessor, Dr. Okpiliya whose administration, he revealed, did so much in terms of welfare for members, and then build upon the achievements.
Dr. Eyang who served as Secretary in the immediate past Executive for two years thanked the members for their votes and promised that he will justify the confidence reposed on him and other members of the new executive by working for the overall welfare of members.
Other members of the new executive are Dr. Ogbonna Kali, Vice Chairman, Dr. Jonas Akung, as Secretary, Dr. James Aboh, for the post of Assistant Secretary, Dr. Michael Ushie, as the Investment Secretary, Dr. Mary Mgbekem, Financial Secretary, Dr. Peter Ubi, for the position of Treasurer, Dr. Martins Olofu, as Internal Auditor, Mr. Patrick Nkang, as Welfare, while the immediate past Chairman, Dr. Okpiliya is equally an automatic member of the new Executive in accordance with the provision of the ASUU Constitution.
