The Association of Cross River Online Journalists, ACROJ has accused the Cross River state government of being slow in demonstrating visible commitment to crime fighting in Calabar.
ACROJ was reacting to the attack on a journalist, Mr. Eyo Charles, the Cros River State correspondent of the Daily Trust, by hoodlums in Calabar. The incident which occurred on Thursday last week, saw him lose cash and other valuables.
In a statement in Calabar yesterday, signed by the Chairman of the group, Mr. Iwara Iwara and made available to CrossRiverWatch, the group expressed concern about the safety of journalists in Cross River State and called implored government to step up action in ensuring that the state remains safe for the practice of journalism.
“On April 11, 2015, a group of reporters who were on their constitutional assignment of covering the presidential election in Calabar were violently attacked by security agents at the collation center and not long after, another journalist has been attacked by hoodlums in Calabar
“Unfortunately, this attack has again brought to the fore, the growing level of insecurity in the Cross River State capital. While we are grateful to God that Eyo Charles survived the attack, we are unhappy that government seems slow in demonstrating visible commitment to crime fighting in Calabar.
“Whatever approach the government has adopted seem half hearted and inconsistent to match the impunity of these criminals. ACROJ condemns the attack on Charles, prays for his recovery and demand that those behind this attack and several others be apprehended and brought to book. We cannot as a state continue to let this happen.” The statement concluded.
