Evacuation of waste by the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) has again stopped with waste piles visible across the city, CrossRiverWatch can authoritatively report.
Findings by CrossRiverWatch reveal that the evacuation in Calabar South stopped long before that of Calabar Municipal council with residents suffering similar fate like less than four months ago where it took the intervention of Governor Benedict Ayade, who personally supervised refuse evacuation to stem the tide.
From Anantigha, to Jebs, Mayne Avenue, Chamley, Calabar road, Watt, Goldie, Etta Agbor and Atimbo axis of the city, waste bins filled above capacity are spilling onto the roads with the most alarming being the one at the Watt market axis of Goldie street, just a stone throw from the Atakpa Division of the Nigerian Police Force which is over ten metres long, about a metre high and three metres across covering more than half the road.
Unconfirmed information from a source in CUDA fingers the non payment of salaries, running into months as the main cause with staff of the Authority marching from their office around 2;30 PM Tuesday afternoon down to the open field in front of the Deputy Governor’s lodge.
Efforts by CrossRiverWatch to ascertain the cause of action was unsuccessful as several staff approached by our reporter kept sighing when asked why they had camped at the location.
It will be recalled that on Friday last week, the executive secretary of CUDA had promised to pay salaries Wednesday, December 16 (tomorrow) following a protest by staff which led to the making of burn fires and barricading of the CUDA junction axis of IBB way.
The state government later wrote a statement that the salaries will be paid by Monday, but CrossRiverWatch findings reveal that up till today, Wednesday, the salaries have not been paid.
