The Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu on behalf of the State Governor, Senator Ben Ayade, received 10 direct solar drive refrigerators and 10 solar power sets from European Union Support Immunization Governance in Nigeria (E.U SIGN) for the State.
Handing over the items, E.U SIGN State Coordinator Dr Bassey Ikpeme, said this will address some cold chain gaps in LGAs and Wards in the state.
He said the gesture was in line with National policy and strategy to phase out the erstwhile non-user friendly non-solar refrigerators in the system.
“This is to support routine immunization and cold chain management system where they have been identified” he said.

According to her it has solved issues of vaccines potency maintenance and storage, as PHCs will not need to depend on electricity to keep vaccines potent.
In her words, ” beyond the direct solar refrigerators, E.U SIGN has equally promised to complete the Cold Store building and equip it, provide Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency with vehicles, tricycles, motorcycles as means of transportation of vaccines to Hard to Reach Areas, train and equip Monitoring & Evaluation officers in the state with laptops and data collection tools. The state is positive that EU SIGN will keep to its part of the bargain. This is evident by the Direct Solar Refrigerator and Solar System seen here today.”
Dr Edu said E.U SIGN just finished the first phase of training for Monitoring and Evaluation officers in the health sector on data collection and analysis and will soon roll out the second phase from June.
