A Dangote Cement truck yesterday at about 7:46pm crashed into 5 vehicles and a motorcycle at the Odukpani Junction, along Calabar – Ogoja express road leaving 24 injured and currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The truck with registration number ICT-11F-050 and with no plate number was fully loaded with cement and his destination could not be verified.
His vehicle rammed into a Toyota Sienna with plate number Abuja HZ719ABC, Volkswagen Golf with plate number Akwa-Ibom AE900AT, Suzuki with plate number Cross River DUK17AXA, Mercedes Benz 190E with plate number Abuja AS774RSH, a Toyota Highlander with plate number DUK273AA and a motorcycle.
The first victim is the Toyota Highlander that was heading for Calabar which after been bumped into from behind by the heavily loaded truck, the truck then hit the Toyota Sienna which then hit the Volkswagen golf in succession.
Still not able to stop, the Dangote truck squeezed the Mitsubishi car and then finally ended up stopping after hitting the Mercedes Benz. For the motorcycle no one was able to account to our reporter how it ended up in the scene.
Speaking to CrossRiverWatch, a Community Youth Leader, who identified himself as ‘Spako’ said it was the concerted efforts of the villagers and well meaning passerby’s who volunteered their vehicles to move those injured to the hospital that saved the situation.
From our newsroom a call was placed to the Cross River State Federal Road Safety Sector Commander, who confirmed that though 24 persons were injured and are receiving treatment, no life was lost.
As at the time of filling this report the accident scene had not been cleared.
