The Cross River State Government has said that it is doing all within its power to contain the influx of mentally deranged people and street urchins as well as keeping them away from the streets, social and commercial centers across the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Calabar Urban Development Authority, Mr. Joe-Mary Ekeng stated this in a visit to the authority’s Vagrant Psychotic Remand Home in Uwanse area of Calabar South where he noted that 95 percent of the inmates were not mad people.
The facility houses about 100 psychotic persons made up of men and women between the ages of 18 to 60, and Mr. Ekeng said most of these persons do not enter the state as individual migrants but are dumped in groups at some lonely spots and allowed to move into our towns and cities.
He called on residents to be vigilant as the presence of the psychotic people disrupts the peace and beautiful tourism environment of the state. He added that the habit of them seeking accommodations at beautiful spots and lonely areas posed security threats.
He averred that some of them: “Enter the state disguised as psychotic persons and use uncompleted buildings as their hideout while studying their points of target by day and at night carry out their notorious activities without the people and men of the security agencies suspecting,”
The CUDA boss also alleged that s
ome were drug dealers who go around by day as mad persons distributing their harmful merchandise to different retail dealers.
The maintenance of the facility, according to Mr. Ekeng was high but, he commended the Governor, Senator Ben Ayade for his determination in fighting any source capable of disrupting peace and security in the state and charged the populace to report such issues to any CUDA personnel or call: 08037208605.
This comes a few days after CrossRiverWatch reported that staff of the authority had manhandled a seemingly mentally deranged person at the Murtala Muhammed highway in Calabar.
