Obudu Most Wanted Gangster Arrested Amidst Pressure From Government Officials To Secure His Release

A very notorious gangster and alleged mastermind of several kidnaps, robberies and gang wars in Obudu and Obanlikwu LGAs, Mr. Fidelis Awusha a.k.a. Mandela, was yesterday, (Tuesday) arrested by the police in Obudu LGA in Northern Cross River State.

Mr. Awusha who is also accused of being the principal suspect in the lynching and burning to death of a young lady “china” over a cult dispute, was arrested by police operatives who have been on his trail for sometime now.

CrossRiverWatch however gathered that this is not the first time the alleged murderer is being arrested. A police source in Obudu told this reporter that the major challenge they have is that even if they charge him to court, sooner or later, he will return to continue his nefarious activities even as the DPO is said to be under pressure to release him.

“This is not the first time Mandela will be arrested. We in the police are trying our best to curb his atrocities. But everytime we arrest him and other cultists and criminals, your brothers in government will start mounting pressure to get them released. Even since yesterday that we arrested him, they have started mounting pressure on DPO to secure his release. I don’t want to mention names, but if not for the backing him and his gang are getting from your brothers in government, he is a small fly to deal with. It will be better to move him to the headquarters in Calabar.” Our source who did not want to be named, said.

The Cross River State Police Spokesperson, ASP Irene Ugbo, said she was not yet briefed on the matter and promised to get back to our newsroom after speaking with the DPO in charge.

It will be recalled that there has been an upsurge of gang violence in Obudu and environs including several unresolved cases of robberies and kidnappings allegedly masterminded by Fidelis Awusha, who is now in police custody.

Awusha is however said to be enjoying the backing of several top state government officials, some of who are said to also be his relations, according to security sources.

An operative of the DSS in Obudu also told CrossRiverWatch that Awusha gang members are connected to the attack on the immediate past Head of the Service in Obudu who was recently attacked by hoodlums, hospitalized and later transferred from Obudu.
