‘I Don’t Like To Repeat Classes’ – Speaker John Gaul On Not Returning To State Assembly

In what seems an indirect response to speculations why he preffered the National Assembly over a third term in The Cross River State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Honorable John Lebo (PDP, Abi) has said that his going back to the State legislative house was out of the question as he is not in the habit of repeating classes.

Mr. Lebo disclosed this on Sunday while giving a brief speech during the thanksgiving service of the leader of the House, Honorable Ucheche (PDP, Obanliku) at his native Lishiche village.

According to the Speaker, His decision, alongside a few others to step aside for others to take their places at the assembly was due to the fact that: “I don’t like to repeat classes.”

CrossRiverWatch’s political editor said the statement meant he had made up his mind to gun for the House of Representatives seat representing Yakurr/About federal constituency despite speculations at the time that he had backed down following claims that incumbent, Bassey Ewa may likely return.

In his speech, the speaker who spoke on behalf of all the members of the State House of Assembly acknowledged that he was inspired by the decision of Mr. Ucheche who had said he would not be going back to serve in the ninth Assembly in order to give others the opportunity to serve also.

It would be recalled that Mr. Lebo beat several others to clinch the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party at the primaries but lost to Alex Egbonna of the All Progressives Congress in the February 23, 2019 presidential and national assembly elections.

And, he said a few other members also made the decision to step aside for others to take their places as well in the Assembly.

There will be nine new members of the 25 man Assembly when it is inaugurated in June. Three are from the northern senatorial district, four from central and two from the south.

Of the 16 old members, the two representing Calabar South constituencies will be serving their third terms while the other 14 will be serving their second terms.
