The Senator representing Cross River South district in the National Assembly, Gershom Bassey is currently the best performing federal lawmaker from Cross River State with 19 bills to his name in the midterm performance report published by civil society organisation, OrderPaper.
The organisation measures performance based on number of bills passed.
Mr. Bassey’s 19 bills, 10 of which were introduced in the first legislative session trumps the cumulative number of bills sponsored by the eight House of Representative members between June 2019 and May 2021.
Notable among his bills is the Sexual Offenders (Registration) Bill 2021 – SB 711.
The three Senators from Cross River have a total of 27 bills among them with Mr. Bassey sponsoring 54.29% of that. However, this figure does not include the 8 bills sponsored by Senator Rose Oko before she passed away in March 2020. This means Cross River Senators have sponsored a total of 35 bills within the period under review.
Meanwhile, despite her demise, Senator Oko’s records trumps the four sponsored by Senator Sandy Onor representing Cross River Central (11.43%) and the four of Stephen Odey of Cross River North (11.43%) who has been removed by the Court of Appeal with Representative Jarigbe Agom to replace him.
Senator Oko’s contribution in terms of percentage stands at 22.85% of the bills. She also outperformed the top member of the House of Representatives, Legor Idagbo who has 7 bills to his credit, all passed in the first legislative year.
In overall aggregate, the three senators contributed only 3.6% of the over 750 bills introduced in the Nigerian Senate. However, those of Senator Oko are not included.
