Commuters plying the Calabar – Ikom highway are currently stranded at Ibiae, Biase Local Government Area due to traffic jam following an accident by a truck.
The truck’s bucket which holds the goods tipped over while the truck was trying to cross a culvert under reconstruction as part of the work for the reconstruction of the 74 kilometer Akpet – Odukpani section of the Calabar – Ikom – Katsina-Ala highway.
And, since one lane has already been excavated by the construction firm, Sermatech construction company limited, commuters are currently stranded.
“We are at Ibiae palm estate and it happened just before my eyes,” Perpertua Ogri, a postgraduate student at a tertiary institution in Calabar told CrossRiverWatch.
“The firm is not on site today and it has been hectic because people are suggesting different strategies that are not working,” Perpertua said.
Another commuter who simply gave his nae as Okoi said locals are already carting away the goods in the truck.
“I thought they were helping to evacuate the trailer but clearly these people are stealing,” Okoi said.
Perpertua said she is aware people were helping to evacuate the truck but could not say whether they are stealing as she was too tired to leave her vehicle and check where the flour bags were stacked.
The incident occurred at about 1:10PM on Saturday.
And, as at press time, a bulldozer which tried to tow the truck failed.
Also, an attempt to grade a section of the road for commuters to use did not work due to the rains which made the place marshy and muddy, thus, unusable for commuters.
An excavator was brought in by Sermatech to try an tow the truck which failed. Also, attempts to fill the lane excavated for vehicles to pass did not work as the soil remains too soft for usage.
