The ongoing membership registration exercise of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC in Cross River State suffered setback in Abi Local Government as thugs allegedly loyal to the ruling PDP disrupted the exercise in some of the registration units.
Sources alleged that registration materials of the APC were destroyed by the thugs who prevented the party agents from going ahead with the exercise vowing not to let the opposition get an inroad in the local government which is the home town of the State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke.
A chieftain of the APC, Mr. Hilliard Eta while confirming the disruption added that the development stands as the only major challenge of the exercise adding that the exercise has been ongoing smoothly.
When CrossRiverWatch monitored events earlier today, it was discovered that the party which had earlier announced that the polling units are the registration centers had no staff in most of those centers particularly in Calabar the state capital.
It was gathered that the party agents in the state have resorted to door-to-door drive to register members.
CrossRiverWatch tried to locate registration centers in the city but could not come across any today but came across some registration officials knocking on doors of residences to get people registered.
A registration official, Okon Hanson told our reporter that they are combing the nooks and crannies of the city to get people registered and the response has been encouraging. “We know that if we stayed on one spot people would not come out to register so we have to take the cards to them in their homes and shops”.
Meanwhile, a socio-political group known as the ‘’Restoration Team’’ has announced plans to commence a sensitization campaign aimed at wooing the mass of the people of the state to identify with the party.
The group in a meeting in Calabar,Cross River state disclosed that it would tour the 18 local government areas of the state to sensitise the people on the need to identify with the APC especially in the light of the current wind of political change blowing across the country.’
The Chairman of the body, Prince Iso Bassey Edim said ‘’the group considers the development as very necessary so that our dear state does not play the second fiddle role as the APC takes over governance at the center in 2015.’’
.
He added that a 10-man committee headed by Mr Frank Okpe has been set up to ensure the flag off of the sensitization campaign which is billed for next month.
The former Deputy Governorship Candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN in the 2012 governorship elections in the state, Elder David Okon said the campaign was a worthwhile venture as it would give Cross Riverians the opportunity to make informed decisions about their political leanings.
