The notoriety of Calabar residents for jungle justice in recent times was again brazenly displayed when an angry mob yesterday pounced on three young men who snatched a bag from a woman in Calabar the Cross River State capital and inflicted severe machete cuts on them and set their Audi car ablaze.

The incident which happened around 10am on Monday morning saw a large crowd of spectators who stood by to watch.

An eye witness who gave his name as Asuquo narrated to CrossRiverWatch how the thieves snatched a bag containing an unspecified sum of money from a woman who just stepped out of a new generation bank along Calabar Road and sped off. “They collected a bag from the woman at Calabar Road and drove through Target down to Goldie here where they were accosted by the mob”. Asuquo said.

According to Asuquo who is a vendor at Goldie by Atu Junction, another lady who saw when the thieves snatched the money from the woman drove behind them and alerted some people on phone what had happened and “Two other people with cars joined her and they trailed the thieves and when they got to Goldie by Atu roundabout, they attempted to make a u-turn and the lady trailing them and the other two cars blocked them from all sides”.

He said when the thieves saw that they had been trapped they simply wind their car glasses and remained inside because the place is a busy roundabout and an attempt to escape would have been fruitless so they simply remained inside the car.

The lady, our source said, came out of her car and raised alarm which attracted a mob instantly and the thieves were brought out. “I used my hand and broke open the car glasses and brought out the boys and some people came with machetes”.

The thieves, Asuquo narrated, were inflicted severe cuts and their Audi car set ablaze before the arrival of a team of policemen from the Atakpa Police Division to take them into custody.

Mr. Hogan Bassey, the Cross River State police Command spokesman said “the boys are with us and are being given medical attention and would soon appear in court after investigations are completed”
