A contingent of athletes from the University of Calabar, UNICAL today left Calabar for Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU Ile-Ife, Osun State, the host institution for the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA billed for February 12-22, 2013.

The Director of Sports Student Union Government, UNICAL Comrade Inang Ruth Essien told CrossRiverWatch on phone that “We’re ready for the games, we started training early enough even before the strike”.

Inang disclosed that apart from training for the NUGA competition, they were also training for the West African Games, WAG 2014 to be hosted by UNICAL.

The Sports Director revealed that they are participating in football, basketball, table tennis, judo, athletics and badminton.

She was confident that “We are going to return with gold medals especially in table tennis and athletics”.

According to her, team Unical have for each sporting event a coach but when CrossRiverWatch offered to talk to one of the coaches embarking on the journey with them she said, “They are sleeping”.

This years event will attract over 60 universities and 7,000 athletes that will feature in 15 different sports, includingTrack & Field, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Handball and Judo.

Others are Hockey, Football, Swimming, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.
