The Chairman, College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU South-South, who doubles as the Chapter Chairman of COEASU Cross River State Dr. Agba Linus has reiterated his union’s commitment to their on-going nation-wide strike and the willingness of the state wing to continue with the industrial action even if the Federal Government settle its scores with other chapters.

He barred his mind while addressing journalists in his office at College of Education Akamkpa. He said: “Even if the Federal Government complies with others, we at COE Akamkpa will not resume because the major issue at stake here is still at lip service, in other words not addressed”. Adding that “If our plight was looked into by now, we would have resumed full academic activities”.

He maintained that in an institution where a Governing Council exist, it’s the duty of the council to say what stays or not, what happens or not, what is and should be because that is it’s role mandated upon it by the state government, questioning that “Why will the Governing Council approve promotion and the Head of Service will mad dash it saying there is supposed to be a common promotion exercise for us?”

He described the action of the action of the Head of Service as insane noting that it happens nowhere else. “Besides our criteria for promotion are the qualifications we attain, educational materials published, hectic regular research, preservation of knowledge and positive transfer of acquired knowledge etcetera” questioning again that “Which other is like ours that a doctorate degree holder, associate professors, even professors in education will be subjected to a local promotion exercise?”.

He lamented that the implementation of the promotion approved by the college Governing Council is yet to attract its’ accrued financial dividends emphatically demanding that government must respect polices and its established organs.

He explained that with such situation staff will be stagnated and its resultant implication will be staff migration which is very free “because a doctorate degree holder has no limitation, institutions world over will smile and offer them employment and our system will rot after all just within this short period some lecturers have gone and others unhappily retired”, he added.

Comrade Linus also disclosed that the outcome of the climax meeting between the Union and government schedule for 18th March, 2014 is what will determine the fate of the nation-wide strike while appealing to college students’ nationwide to bear in mind that they are not fighting for self aggrandizing reasons but a cause that that if not fought for now the student will be the victims.
