The Cross River State Security Unity Football Competition for military, para-military and other uniform organizations has ended in Calabar.
The competition finished with team Customs as winning the cup after defeating the Nigeria Police by a one goal margin leaving the Cops in second place with the National Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC coming third place after defeating team Road Safety 2 – 0 in the third place match.
The Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Cross River state, Mr. Patrick Ugbe described the tournament as a panacea to the frequents outbursts experienced amongst the uniform personnel maintaining that the competition fosters unity amongst the security agencies by providing a platform for interaction and intimation.
He commended the winners and noted that in a game of two when there is only one prize, there must be a winner and a loser to balance the equation.
He also urged those who lost not to see themselves as failures because there is room for improvement especially as the competition is going to be yearly.
The Commissioner represented by Elder Egba Mbang promised to support the competition fervently next year.
The Chairman of the competition, Deputy Commandant of Corps, DCC, National Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC Calabar DCC Haliru Usman while speaking said he is happy because the aim of the competition has been achieved.
He identified the football pitch, finance and foreign/hired players as the problems the maiden edition of the competition faced maintaining that the next one will be free from such ills.
However, Usman commended the participating teams and the winners urging those that could not make it into the laurels stage to work harder next year.
In his remark, the Local Organizing Committee, LOC Chairman, Assistant Superintendent of Prison, ASP Eke Nsa Nta said he is fulfilled to have successfully completed the competition without any untoward attitude from the uniform men other than the normal football arguments.
He commended those who supported the competition which according him has gone a long way in fostering peace and tranquility amongst them. He maintained that next year the game will be much more fun and will encapsulate not just football but other sporting activities.
The prison officer used the medium to appeal to the participating teams to serve as ambassadors of the project which he explained is a worthy course.
An award was presented to the sponsors and the best coach of the competition, coach of Team Custom, Chief Custom Assistant Edet Patrick Okon who was short of words but gave glory to the Almighty God.
The first, second and third teams carted away what the LOC chairman calls “undisclosed sum”.
