The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Civil Society Observatory on the Administration of Criminal Justice in Cross River State, has joined the view to create effective public awareness on the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice in the state.
CrossRiverWatch learned that as part of the activities of the CSO observatory group in the State, the group had recently met with the leadership of FIDA and NUJ on two separate dates where they talked tough on the ACJA/L implementation in the State, with a view to seeking drastic improvements.
Assuring of his union’s commitment to the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in the State, Comrade Nsa Gill, Chairman of NUJ Cross River State Council assured that the issue of the administration of the Criminal justice system is very important which the public needs to understand the rights that they have as some people capitalize on the ignorance of the public to make others to suffer.
“For us Journalists, we work with information. So, please share relevant information with the media. We want that confidence building with our clients. So, please work with professional journalists. Feel free at any time to share information with us,” Nsa said.
Speaking on behalf of the CSO Observatory, Mr. Obase Okanke, Chairman of the Observatory, explained that the observatory is “a combination of organizations and NGOs that have an interest in justice, fairness, equity, and good governance.”
According to him: “We are here to ensure improved and enlarged collaboration,” he said; decrying the decreased number of journalists and other stakeholders in the society with knowledge about the ACJA/L, or the system.
On their part, FIDA through the Chairperson, Ann Awan, assured of their commitment to improving the criminal justice system in the State
The CSO observatory has continued to meet with stakeholders to chart the way forward on its beat to ensure proper administration of Criminal Justice and improve the system.
