The Cross River State House of Assembly has moved a motion calling on Governor Bassey Otu and security agencies to facilitate the immediate release of Prof Patrick Egaga; a senior lecturer at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) kidnapped by unknown gunmen.
In a plenary held during the week at the Assembly chamber, the House in a motion of urgent public importance said the UNICAL lecturer’s continuous stay in the kidnappers’ den is disturbing.
Moving the motion, the member representing Bekwarra State Constituency Honorable Omang Omang prayed Governor Otu and the relevant security agencies to facilitate his unconditional freedom.
The motion sought to mandate the State Government to as a matter of urgency, procure General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) tracking devices to facilitate the tracing and arrest of kidnappers, as well as make provisions for adequate equipment to the relevant security agencies to stand down the incessant kidnapping in the State.
He noted: “The continuous stay of the lecturer in the kidnappers’ den has thrown his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire University community into palpable fear and despair.”
Members, in reaction, lamented the total lack of facilities for police checks and patrols across the State.
The House, condemned in entirety the incessant kidnappings in the State, maintaining that no one is safe anymore.
