electrocuted

A 24-year-old man was electrocuted on Monday while attempting to steal electricity cable in a transformer station at Government Technical College, Ikot Efanga Mkpa, 8 Miles, Calabar.

When Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident, his lifeless body was found hanging between high tension poles and was later brought down by men of the Fire Service, Calabar.

At the base of the transformer station, it was discovered that the suspected thief had earlier dug out and cut off cables from the earth before climbing the poles to untie the other end.

An eyeswitness who gave his name simply as Ekpenyong believed that the incident might have occurred on Sunday night as the body of the said thief was seen early on Monday morning.

According to Ekpenyong, “that cable which he attempted to steal costs about N300,000. We had similar experience in our street when thieves made away with our transformer cables after which we had to contribute N300,000 to replace it.”

Many residents of the area expressed happiness that at least one of those who had been throwing thousands of people into darkness was ‘arrested by God,’ and prayed that the incident would serve as deterrent to electricity cable thieves.
