First prize winner of the 42 Kilometers Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon Race, 2024 Edition in Cross River State will smile home the sum of two million Naira, organizers say.
The Cross River State Government in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Sports Development and a group of entrepreneurs under the aegis of Creation Associate, have disclosed readiness for the athletic event that is expected on November 23.
The 42 Kilometers Agbokim Falls Green Marathon Race, is aimed at promoting sports development, market the waterfalls and campaign for sustainable environmental conservation in the region.
The Chief Executive Officer of Creation Associate, Mr. Emem Udominyang, disclosed the development to newsmen in Calabar. He said state actors behind the marathon race include former Commissioner for Culture, Tourism development – Mr. Eric Anderson, Felix Uyah and Ikpeme Bassey amongst others.
While the winners of the race will coast home with N2m star prize, the second runner up and consolation prizes for the athletes is N1 million.
Details about the race that will attract athletes across the country according to organizers states that it will commence from Ikom Last-Motor-Mission junction, Ajassor and terminate at Agbokim Waterfalls.
The CEO of Creation Associates, Emem Udominyang said the trail-blazing sports tourism event is duly endorsed by the Federal and State Ministry of Sports Development, Federal and State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, and also disclosed that Governor Bassey Otu has taken care of all registration fees “to make it a free entry event for this first edition.”
“Our expectation is that athletes will participate in one of the three categories of the distance race, either a full marathon of 42.195Kms, half marathon of 21 Kms or the fun marathon of 5Kms.”
He averred that the marathon will add value to the economy of the state stressing that the Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon will produce long distant racing athletes that will compete at the international level and bring the state and nation into further limelight.
