The Cross River State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force, says investigation will be launched concerning alleged police brutality by it former personnel.

An amature video circulating on social media shows how a police officer brutalized a civilian in Boki Local Government Area of the State.

In a press release issued on Tuesday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) SP Irene Ugbo, the Command said the police officer in question – Benedict Osang is no longer a member of the Force.

The release cleared that Osang, a former Police Constable, was enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force as part of the 2011 recruit intake. However, Osang deserted the Force while serving in Rivers State Police Command and is currently a political appointee in Boki Local Government Area and is no longer a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Cross River State Police Command emphasizes that Benedict Osang is no longer affiliated with the police force, and therefore, the Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command, has no further dealings or obligations towards him. Nonetheless, it remains the responsibility of the Command to protect lives and property, apprehend offenders, and ensure the diligent prosecution of any criminal activities.

“In light of the serious nature of the allegations, the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, PSC, FCAI, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged violations of citizens’ rights and any criminal activities linked to Benedict Osang or any other individual involved,” it stated, adding that the Command remains committed to promoting respect for human rights and upholding the highest standards of professional conduct.

The Commissioner of Police assures Cross River residents residents that the Command will continue to ensure the enforcement of rule of law and standards of best practices.

CP Grimah “also encourage any residents of Boki Local Government Area who have experienced victimization or rights abuse related to this matter to come forward and provide relevant evidence to support the ongoing investigation.”
