The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Alfred Achebe has said that everything had been put in place for the consecration of the first Grand Lodge of the Freemasons in Nigeria in Calabar.
Achebe said this on Thursday in Calabar while briefing the media on the preparations for the consecration scheduled for Tinapa Business Resort on Saturday.
The Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Ireland, Mr. George Dunlup, and the Grand Master of Scotland, Mr. Charles Gordon, have arrived Calabar to perform the consecration ceremony.
Achebe, who is the Grand Master designate in Nigeria, told crossriverwatch that the organization decided to chose Calabar as the venue for the consecration because of its historical significance.
“We chose Calabar because it used to be the light of Nigeria. Calabar represents antiquity. Calabar represents modernity; and Calabar was the first seat of the first Irish Lodge. We are also here in Calabar to savour the serenity and beauty of the city,” he said.
According to him, the consecration was the first of its kind in Nigeria, adding that their membership cuts across all spectres of human beings.
“We have Professionals, captains of industries, traditional rulers and others who have done great things in their chosen fields,” he added.
He said that members of the lodge were responsible citizens who are non partisan.
He said that the organisation was studying the flood situation in parts of the Country, adding that as a charity organisation they will intervene to assisting the victims in due course.
“As a body, when we meet, we will table the issue of flood. The issue of resettlement of affected victims will be discussed and we shall raise funds for that purpose,” Achebe stressed.
Achebe advised the Federal Government to take proactive measures to prevent future flooding in the country.
