The Independent National Electoral Commission would soon commence nationwide registration of voters preparatory for the 2015 elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of Cross River State, Mr. Mike Igini told Channels Television on the side-line of the commission’s four-day retreat which ended in Kaduna on Friday, that the exercise would afford eligible voters the opportunity to register while those with temporary voters’ card would be issued a permanent computerized card during the exercise.

Mr. Igini added that the decision to computerize the voters’ card was in line with the commission’s plans to checkmate multiple voting and ballot box snatching during elections. “We appeal to all stakeholders in the election process including politicians to join hands with the commission towards conducting a credible poll next year,” he said.

Mr. Igini was speaking in reaction to the 2015 general election time table released by the electoral umpire.

According to a statement by the commission’s secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, at the end of the Kaduna retreat, the commission said political parties campaign for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on November 16, 2014 while that of the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections will start on November 30.

The state governorship and House of Assembly elections would be held on February 28. The statement also announced that the Ekiti State governorship election will hold on 21st of June 2014, while the Osun State governorship Election is scheduled to hold on 9th August, 2014.

The three-paragraph statement read: “After the deliberations at the four-day retreat held in the Assa Pyramid Hotel, Kaduna from January 21 to 24, 2014, the commission has scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 14, 2015 and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for February 28, 2015″.

Governorship elections will hold in all states except, Anambra, Bayelsa, Kogi, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States because governors in these states have not completed their terms in office.
