The Cross River State chapter of the PDP under the leadership of Senator Liyel Imoke has re-engineered the caucuses headship and membership in the three senatorial districts of the state and effectively removed those who are not amenable to the governor’s direction on the choice of a successor.
Senator Imoke who inaugurated the Caucuses of the party in the Northern and Central Senatorial Districts of the state on the 14th and 15th of March respectively changed the headship of the Senatorial District Caucuses from the highest office holders which are the Senators representing the various senatorial districts to his cronies.
The Northern Senatorial district Caucus is now headed by Chief Linus Okom, Central by Col. Pam Ogar rtd, and South, Mr Gershom Bassey. The name of Dr. Sandy Onor, the suspended Commissioner for Environment who was an active member of the Central Senatorial District caucus was completely removed from the list obviously for lending his support to the governorship ambition of Goddy Jedy Agba.
A political aide to Senator Imoke told CrossRiverWatch that the removal of Dr Sandy Onor from the caucus was deliberate because he was jumping the gun by declaring his support for Agba whom the governor is not amenable to in his choice of a successor. “In the scale of those whom Oga has in mind Goddy Agba does not feature anywhere and Sandy is backing him; with his removal from the Caucus, let us see how he will make a case for his candidate?”
According to the aide who did not want to be named, it is impossible for someone outside the PDP family in the state to succeed Imoke. “He is in Abuja and assumes that because he has money he will buy everybody and become governor what about those of us who have been working since 1999 till now, can’t we lay claim to the position or is he the most qualified person because of his money?”
While inaugurating the Senatorial District Caucuses, Senator Imoke said they would serve as clearing houses for governorship aspirants by screening all those interested in the position and reporting to the party which in turn will feed him with what is going on in the field.
He threatened those who may give in to pressure or be bought with money to resign their membership because the party will not take it kindly with such persons. “Some say they can buy the conscience of some people with money and that is the worst insult because a man’s conscience is his life and so if you know your conscience can be bought you are not the kind of person we need for this job, so better resign your membership now”.
