The incessant traffic congestion along Calabar- Odukpani highway mostly during mid week and some weekends has continued to bring untold hardship to both commuters and other users of the highway.
The road which is the only entrance into Calabar, the capital of Cross River State was last Wednesday brought to a standstill and created a horrible nightmare for the road users, leaving commuters coming in and out of Calabar with no other choice than to trek the long distance before getting into town.
CrossRiverWatch reports that the gridlock was caused by a 30,000 liter fuel tanker which fell across the road at a bridge/junction by Pamol in Odukpani LGA thereby making the road impassable.
Commuters and other passers-by were seen trekking in their numbers due to the incident.
Some of those who spoke to CrossRiverWatch called on the federal government to dualize the road as a matter of urgency, stressing that the only road leading to Calabar has become impassable even as some of them called on Governor Liyel Imoke not to see the road as a Federal road by taking immediate action to salvage the situation for the people he promised to defend and protect at all times while taking the oath of office.
Efforts by CrossRiverWatch to speak with the Federal Controller of Works in charge of Cross River State were unsuccessful as several calls made to his phone were not answered but men of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps were seen on ground controlling the traffic.
