The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor James Epoke has advocated the use of well researched herbal medicine to serve as better alternatives for curing nervous systems complications and other ailments in the African society.
Speaking at the College of Medical Science lecture organized by the University, in Calabar, the Vice Chancellor said the University is investing heavily in many researches that will encourage the use of experimental herbal application in Nigeria and beyond.
The lecture which was on herbal application in Neuro Science-work from the laboratory brought participants in both herbal and medical sciences to discuss on the future and prospects of herbal medicines.
The Vice Chancellor said the research into neuro science on how herbs can be used on ailments like convulsion and other nervous system ailments is ongoing in the University.
Epoke called on public spirited individuals and corporate organizations to support Unical in its determination to make an acceptable change in the application of herbal medicine.
The guest lecturer and Professor of Neuro and Gastrointestinal Physiology, Professor Eme Osim urged Nigerians to go back to herbal medicine, saying most of the drugs prescribed for use by doctors at the conventional hospital were all derived from herbs.
Osim advocate for more research by professionals and herbal experts on how to administer herbal drugs to build confidence in its use.
The lecture organized by the College of Medical Sciences of the University was chaired by the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivara Esu and sponsored by Emzor Pharmaceuticals company.
