Cross River State governor, Senator Ben Ayade, has described late Chief HID Awolowo, wife of the first Premier of Western Nigeria, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as a true Amazon who left her imprints in the sands of time.

In a condolence message by his Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, Ayade said: “Late Mama HID was a nationalist and a true patriot who strived to preserve the unity of the country, as she displayed extreme courage, discipline, honesty and commitment to the struggle for equal right and the emancipation of womanhood.

“Despite her exalted status, Mama was a most worthy friend of the womenfolk, a dedicated mother, a crusader, an embodiment of wisdom, compassion and selflessness. She was an inspiration to millions and a reference point as devout woman leader who lived and served her community selflessly.

“As a true Amazon, HID made a lot of sacrifice for a just an equal society of her time. Her sense of patriotism and commitment to the unity of the country defined her place throughout her life time.‎

“Her death therefore, is a great loss not only to the good people of Ogun State, but to the entire nation. Her wealth of wisdom will be sorely missed, especially at this time.

“On behalf of the government and good people of Cross River State, I pray God to grant her family the fortitude to bear this great loss and may her soul find repose in the Lord.”
