BEING A TEXT OF HER ADMONITION TO MARK THE 2016 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT.

19th June 2015, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 19th June of each year the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, in order to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict – related sexual violence, to honor the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives for the eradication of these crimes.

A panel discussion to commemorate the first annual international day for the Elimination of sexual violence in conflict was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, 21st June 2016.

Sexual Violence is a serious problem that can have lasting, harmful effects on victims and their families, friends and communities. One of every two women will be harassed at some point during their academic or working lives.

The harassment is degrading, frightening and sometimes physically violent and frequently extends over a considerable period of time and can result in psychological and health related consequences.

The abduction of Chibok girls or any other human being is among the examples of the use of sexual violence. rape, child trafficking and other forms of sexual violence can bring about a war crime and threatens peace and security of any society.

There is increase in sexual violence by extremist and terrorist organizations to control and intimidate communities.

PREVENTING SEXUAL ASSAULT AND VIOLENCE.

*Campaign to expose the heinous crimes committed against women and all forms of human trafficking.

*Advocating for action and political will to address sexual violence to stop rape.

*Strengthening rule of law to build capability to counter conflict related sexual violence and strengthening accountability for crimes and prosecuting the perpetrators of sexual violence.

*Providing governance and reform processes that improve women access to decision making and strengthening their voices to stop rape and other social vices.

POSSIBLE TIPS FOR AVOIDING SEXUAL ASSAULT.

-Stick with your friends and make a plan before you go out.

-Hold on to your drink when you are in a social gathering and don’t share drinks.

-Avoid clubs or parties that charge men but let women enter and drink for free.

-Don’t get in over your head and know your limits. Alcohol is the most common date rape drink.

-Tell a friend where you are going, especially if you are going out on a first date or a blind date.

-Pay attention to what you hear. A person may have a bad reputation for a reason.

-Be aware of controlling behavior in your date or relationship.

-Avoid secluded places where could be vulnerable.

-Be aware of inequalities in relationship.

-Practice self defence.

-Challenge sexist attitude that make rape acceptable.

-Recognize that sexual violence will not end until men become part of the solution.
