Senator Asuquo, Eteng Seeks Establishment Of South-South Development Commission, Institute Of Petroleum

Senators representing Cross River Southern Senatorial district – Asuquo Ekpenyong Jrn and his brother representing the Central Senatorial district – Eteng Jones Williams have sponsored Bills seeking the creation of the South-South Development Commission and the Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria, respectively.

The proposed bill for the creation of the South-South Development Commission is sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and co-sponsored by all South-South Senators and has passed its First Reading.

Senator Ekpenyong disclosed that the bill was necessitated rising from proposed Development Commissions for the North-West, South-West, North-Central, and South-East. He noted that three other States in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are not in the South-South region.

Abia and Imo States, which are part of the NDDC, are also included in the proposed South-East Development Commission just as Ondo, which is part of the NDDC, is included in the proposed South-West Development Commission.

He said the Bill is necessary to ensure equity amongst the six geopolitical zones.

Similarly, Senator Eteng Williams’s Bill to establish the Chartered Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers of Nigeria bill 2024 (SB. 539) has scaled its First Reading on the floor of the Senate.

Speaking on the bill, Senator Williams explained that the purpose was to establish a body to regulate, control, and determine the standards of knowledge to be attained by people seeking to become chartered petroleum and gas engineers; and for related matters.
