The Nigerian Government is exploring ways to promote national health and wellness through sporting activities says the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh.
The senior government official stated this while receiving the organizers of the 19th Nigerian Oil and Gas industry games, NOGIG slated for April 21st through 27th in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, a statement issued by his spokesperson, Diana-Mary Nsan on Saturday says. The delegation was led by the Chairperson of the games, Dr. Ifeyiwa Mojo-Eyes.
“Increased involvement in sports has become expedient, as it will not only enhance individual health and fitness but also contribute to reduced national expenditure on healthcare,” the statement read, adding that the minister commended the organizers for “contributing to health and wellness through sports.”
The ministry has proposed an annual National Sports and Fitness Day, which aims to elevate awareness of mental, physical, and emotional well-being across the country.
Meanwhile, the games which will feature teams from 13 companies in the sector are aimed are ensuring wellness and enhancing productivity by fostering a culture of physical activity and healthy competition.
Commending the consistency demonstrated by the organizers, the Minister noted the legacy of the event and its significance within the Nigerian sports landscape and reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Sports Development in championing sports development and promoting a healthier, more active nation.
