Wild Celebration: Final Year UNICAL Students Escape Death As Management Suspend More, Set Committee

One could imagine if the Management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) was a soothsayer when they warned graduating final year students to avoid wild celebration, reckless driving and flying of colors within and outside the school premises in order to avert avoidable occurrence,

The said directive was however, not adhered to as graduating students stormed the campus to merry wildly. The school management in what is seen as an act of disobedience has since then gone on suspension sprees.

On Thursday August 15, 2024, a joyful graduation celebration of some students mostly from the Department of Philosophy took an unfortunate turn when some were involved in a car accident.

The accident which nearly took their lives occurred in the University campus behind the male hostel Hall 4, drawing a crowd of onlookers.

Eyewitnesses told CrossRiverWatch that the silver Benz -E300 with registration number NZN-15AJ veered off the road and landed in a ditch. Fortunately, there were no reports of severe injuries or causality. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Management – whether speed or inexperience contributed to the mishap.

In a suspension galore, the school management has also suspended students of the Philosophy Department for alleged reckless driving.

CrossRiverWatch learned that the suspension is indefinite, pending the investigation outcome. The affected students have been directed to vacate the campus and cease all academic activities until further notice.

A Special Committee has been set up by the Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Obi to investigate the activities of the final-year students who violated the institution’s regulations.

The committee has also requested a letter of explanation from the affected students in the Department of Computer Science, Environmental Protection and Resources Management, Mass Communication, Microbiology and Philosophy.

They are mandated to submit to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) office on or before Monday, 19th August, 2024.
