Minister Orders Investigation Into Afokang Prison Revelations

By CrossRiverWatch Admin

The Minister of Interior, Honourable Olabunmi Tunji-Ojo has ordered for an investigation into CrossRiverWatch’s revelations about the poor feeding and welfare of inmates in Afokang Prison, Calabar, Cross River State.

The Minister stated this in a release made available by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao expressing that the Ministry has taken grave exception to the disturbing video report on how inmates at Afokang Custodial Center are being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast.

He said he views it as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled, directing a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter, and those responsible will be held accountable.

Tunji-Ojo warns that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and welfare of inmates will not be tolerated, adding that the Service must ensure inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The Minister stressed that he will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody.
