Police Parades 7 Suspects On Sundry Crimes, Recover Arms In Cross River

The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Police Force led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Peter Ukachi has held his first media parly in the state.

The engagement with Journalists in Calabar was also the parade of seven suspects for various offenses and the recovery of one locally fabricated Beretta pistol with two rounds of live 9mm ammunition, and other exhibits.

Arrest On Burglary

According to the police, on the 19th of August, 2024 at about 11:30 PM, a case of burglary was reported at the Akamkpa Division by one Mr. Lawrence Okon Ikpeme, of his house was burgled and valuables and the sum of six hundred and twenty-one thousand (N621,000.00) Naira stolen from his cupboard.

The complainant also reported that seventy (70) pairs of short sleeve shirts worth three hundred and sixty thousand Naira (N360,000.00), twelve pairs of jean trousers valued two hundred and sixteen thousand (N216,000.00) Naira as well as a half bag of rice worth forty thousand (N40,000.00) Naira were carted away. The Command said upon the report, detectives from the Division arrested a 22-year-old suspect, Joseph Oko Ewa, who was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) for discreet investigation.

Unlawful Possession Of Firearm

The Police said on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the operatives of the Anti-cultism and Kidnapping Squad were alerted that 24 years old Tyoor Williams Ushaheba is a gun runner who supplies arms and ammunition to hoodlums within Cross River State. According to the Police, the operatives of the Squad swiftly mobilized and trialed the suspect to a hideout in Atamunu Street, Calabar South Local Government Area where he was arrested and later confessed to the crime upon interrogation.

“He took the men to his house at Palm Street, Calabar South. A search was carried out that led to the recovery of one (1) locally fabricated Beretta pistol with two (2) rounds of live 9mm ammunition. The suspect will be charged to court for prosecution soonest.”

Ambazonian Separatist

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the police said they got a tip-off that some Cameroonian Ambazonian rebel fighters were residing at No 6 All Nation Road, in Akamkpa Local Government. The surveillance team of the Division monitored and arrested two male and one female suspects identified as Jovany Nji, Tito Calmas, and Cynthia Ini.

Items recovered are some Improvised Explosive Device (IED), pairs of jungle boots, booklets of Ambazonian rebels, two flags, and charms. “The case file has been transferred to State CID for discreet and diligent prosecution.”

Vandalism And Gangsterism

The patrol team of Akamkpa Divisional Police Headquarters on Thursday, October 10, 2024, said while on routine patrol along Etisalat Mast Station, Awi Village, sighted a 22 years-old Ajah Benjamin vandalizing a private telecom mast and two rolls of armored cables. He was arrested and the property recovered.

Same day, a 24-year-old suspected cultist and a student of the College of Education Awi, Akamkpa, Effiong Effiong Bassey was armed with an axe. He was tracked, arrested and upon interrogation confessed to belonging to Black Axe Confraternity cult group.

The Police stated that the suspect said he armed himself due to the gang clash ongoing in the area. “He further stated it was as a result of a clash between Vikings and his cult group as the reason for arming himself. The suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.”
