The Senator representing Cross River Southern senatorial district in the Nigeria Senate, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jrn, has called for the urgent intervention to halt the relentless rise in the cost of data services in Nigeria.

Nigerians have raised concerns on the increasing rise of data by telecommunication companies in the country and has made Internet accessing difficult.

Senator Asuquo on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025 during sitting said the increment in data cost stifle creativity and deepening the digital divide.

“Earlier today I moved a motion calling for the urgent intervention of the Senate to halt the relentless rise in the cost of data services in Nigeria.

He averred that, across the world, young Nigerians are celebrated for their innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit — achievements made possible through access to the internet and with the substantial increase in the cost of data by telecom companies will only result in caging their talents.

“The World is currently at the 4th Industrial Revolution – the Internet of things- a fast, reliable and affordable internet is a precursor for Nigeria’s effective participation in this Industrial Revolution.

“I am thankful to my colleague Senators who not only adopted all the prayers of my motion, but also increased the scope to include other services offered by the telecom providers.”
