The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the reactivation of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system through a secure digital platform, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
The initiative addresses growing public concerns over the harassment of motorists using tinted windows and aims to establish a clear and accountable process for regularizing factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles.
The NPF announced this in a press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stating that with the increasing prevalence of tinted windows in modern automobiles, the NPF recognizes the need for a standardized system that balances legitimate use with public safety.
They noted that tinted vehicles have been associated with criminal activities, including kidnappings and armed robberies, which complicate law enforcement efforts and contribute to public insecurity. “The reactivation of the TGP system is intended to differentiate lawful users—such as individuals with medical needs and security personnel—from those who may misuse tinted vehicles for illegal activities. This strategic move is expected to enhance police investigative capabilities and bolster national security.”
The Police said applicants can process their permits online, with integrated identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), as well as biometric data capture and background checks. The system offers QR-coded digital permits, with a processing time of 72 hours.
To facilitate a smooth transition, a 30-day grace period has been established, starting May 1, 2025, during which motorists are encouraged to obtain their permits. Enforcement of the new regulations will begin after this period.
The NPF has also warned that officers engaging in unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment during enforcement, will face strict disciplinary measures.
IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to a technology-driven and citizen-focused policing strategy, urging the public to support the initiative for safer roads and enhanced public trust.
