Kutia and Ukwortung Clans in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, have finally agreed to put an end to an age long conflict and embrace lasting peace after years of failed settlement attempts.
The communities once coexisted peacefully as brothers and neighbors but over the years engaged in a prolonged conflict, resulting in tragic loss of lives, destruction of properties, and a deep erosion of communal dis-harmony.
Despite several efforts to reconcile both sides, including the setting up of a Peace Committee, a lasting resolution was not achieved. Determined to restore peace, unity, and development, His Royal Majesty, HRM Felix Okudare, Utsu Bette V, acting as custodian of tradition and guardian of communal wellbeing, and with the awareness and support of the Cross River State Government, has stepped in to mediate and guide both parties to a final and peaceful resolution.
The Peace Accord which was mediated by the Paramount Rulers of Obudu, His Royal Majesty Felix Okudare Utsu Bette V, on the 25 July 2025, involves leaders and representatives of both clans accepting to settle with the terms of the agreement at Utsu Bette Palace Ibong, Begiaka in Obudu LGA.
Through the Agreement reached, the both Clans express their collective commitment to reconciliation, peaceful coexistence, and a renewed spirit of brotherhood.
The agreement reads: “One, land division and boundary demarcation; both clans agree to permanently and peacefully divide the disputed land, by geographical separation in recognition that without peace, there can be no meaningful development, the separation starts from old Ogoja road and further through Mopol Barracks distantly putting the two clans apart. At lbong Road there is a little adjustment at Ibong road to create space, straighten and prevent further encroachment and the both parties approved that HRM, Felix Okudare Paramount Ruler of Obudu shall carry out the physical boundary demarcation.”
“Two, cessation of hostilities; both clans agree to end all forms of violence, threats, provocations, and retaliatory actions with immediate effect. All past grievances shall be forgiven and the common good, cultural interactions, intermarriages, festivals, and community-based events shall be encouraged to rebuild the long-standing bond between both clans.”
“Three, Peace Monitoring Committee; a Joint Peace Monitoring Committee shall be established, consisting of respected elders from both Clans and one representative from the Palace of HRM Felix Okudare, the Committee shall oversee the full implementation of this Agreement and serve as the first point of contact for resolving any emerging issues, any breach or threat to this Agreement shall be promptly addressed through traditional dispute resolution mechanisms and, where necessary, referred to appropriate legal or governmental authorities.”
“Four, Community Development and Cooperation; both Clans agree to work together to promote development initiatives, including road construction, schools, health centers, water supply, and economic empowerment programs. And neither Clan shall undertake any action that could disrupt peace, threaten mutual progress, or undermine the dignity of the other.”
The terms of agreement were affirmed and signed by representatives of communities. For Kutia is HRM Simon Umong – Clan Head; Mr. Godwin Ategwu -Secretary; Elder Festus Agim, Elder Christopher Adie, Mr. Michael lkongwhul, Mr.Dominic Umong and Mr.Cyprain Ushie.
Ukwortung counterpart had HRM Moses Odikpo- Clan Head; Mr. Peter Ogani – Chairman; Pastor Gregory Adibor, Mr. Joseph Ujie, Mr. Joseph Egho, Mr. Peter Atta and Joseph Egba.
The Accord was sealed by the Obudu Paramount Ruler HRM Felix Okudare and endorsed by the representative of the Cross River State Government Mr. Godwin Orim Jnr.
