The Cross River State Ministry of Education has issued a directive banning the illegal collection of fees by secondary school and technical college principals for the issuance of WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB certificates.
This was contained in an announcement made available by the state’s Commissioner of Education, Sen. Stephen Odey, stating that it aims to address the arbitrary charges that have been reported to reach ₦5,000 or more.
The commissioner, while condemning the illegal practice, said it is detrimental to the government’s efforts to alleviate the financial burdens faced by parents. He emphasized that the registration fees for these national examinations already cover administrative and certification costs, making any additional charges untenable.
Principals of schools are henceforth directed to refrain from any form of charge for the issuance of certificates to students.
They are advised to adhere to the directives, as any erring heads of schools shall face the penalty.
