PDP Moves To Resolve Internal Crisis Ahead Of Congress In Cross River

By Kelvin Ololo

The Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to tackle in-house factions, differences and address position zoning issues ahead of the State Congress in September 2025.

The resolutions were reached unanimously by critical stakeholders including state and national executives of the opposition party in a consultative meeting held on Friday 29 August 2025 in Calabar.

Speaking at the meeting, Party stakeholders deliberated that by the rigorous participation of critical stakeholders, PDP continues to be a viable platform for political engagement and Party men and women deserve special appreciation.

“The recent progress in resolving issues at the national level serves as a template for states to follow and in that same spirit, all outstanding differences in the Cross River State PDP should receive urgent attention before the State Congress on the 27th of September 2025,” part of the resolution signed by Mrs. Amina Darasimi, Mr. Dennis Nikiri and Mr. Tony Edako.

It was reached that all outstanding contentions within the various organs, chapters and structures of the Party in the State should be addressed without delay and the leadership of the Party in the State take full responsibility.

They emphasized the need to jettison the leadership stance of the past and to consciously seek the buy-in of members, and make reconciliation of factions a priority, while giving appropriate recognition to laid down Party processes and systems.

The consultative meeting condemned attempts by a section of the leadership in the State to foment crisis in the party, by hosting meetings in Abuja including planning a break away meeting for Sunday, 31st August, 2025.

“Anything short of an open, inclusive, peoples’ participatory processes going forward, selective engagements will spell doom for the fortunes of the Party in the State as those left out will seek alternative platforms.”

On the issue of zoning of position in the state, stakeholders agreed that the house will constitute a committee of the whole which will formally adopt the zoning template applicable at the national level.

“The position to keep all the offices currently in the three senatorial districts the same or to be retained and the leadership of the party in the various senatorial districts will undertake micro- zoning within their senatorial districts, while allowing for swaps between local government areas.”

Participants at the meeting expressed that it was a renewed vigor for the opposition party in the state, stating that the Party must call for an expanded Stakeholders Forum, where many of the outstanding issues will be resolved.

The meeting was attended by over 50 party men and women physically and virtually includes the party national Women Leader Hon.Amina Darasimi Bryhm, Sen. Gershon Bassey, Ntufam Ekpo Okon, Sen. Nkoyo Toyo, Dennis Nkiri, Tony Edako and Party leaders from the 18 local Government Areas of the State.
