Methodist Bishop Breaks Silence: Denies Rift With Cleric, Cites Misconduct

By CrossRiverWatch Admin

The Bishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Atamunu Diocese, Calabar, Rt. Rev. Otuekong Ukut Esq., has broken his silence over allegations of unfair treatment leveled against him by Rev. Victor Okon Uloh, a junior priest in one of the Methodist parishes in Calabar.

CrossRiverWatch had months ago, reported that Rev. Uloh raised the alarm of unfair treatment via a letter dated April 27th, 2025, and addressed to the Archbishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Archdiocese of Calabar wherein he raised an alarm over a series of unfair, inhumane treatments and persecution suffered in the hands of Rt. Rev. Ukut.

But, Otuekong has now denied the allegation, accusing Uloh of gross misconduct, indiscipline, blackmail, cyber bullying with the intent of dragging his reputation to the mud, while insisting that the matter has been misrepresented on social media.

Speaking in an interview in Calabar last week, the Bishop averred that Rev. Uloh’s travail began when he displayed unruly behavior during a ministers’ meeting, walking out without justification.

“Instead of following due process for his grievances to be addressed, Rev. Uloh took to social media, spreading false narratives about victimization and humiliation.

“The claims that I forced him to go on his knees or seized his cross were all lies, fabrications and amplified by content creators.

“It is a claim just to tarnish my image. In his written response to queries, he admitted removing the cross himself,” the Bishop clarified.

Otuekong reiterated that Rev. Uloh’s claims of being forced to kneel or having his cross seized were fabrications.

Giving insights on the decision of the church on the issue, Otuekong stated that the church has taken disciplinary measures against Rev. Uloh, directing him to focus on his medical studies before reapplying to serve in the ministry.

Upon completion of his studies, Rev. Uloh will undergo a refresher program at a theological institution and sign a new ordination covenant emphasizing humility, discipline, and obedience to church procedures.

Otuekong advised young people to embrace discipline and Christ-like humility, cautioning against succumbing to secularism, weak thought processing, and social media sensationalism.

The Bishop reaffirmed the Methodist Church’s resolve to uphold discipline among clergy and members, emphasizing that the integrity of the church must never be compromised.
