This year’s Christmas celebration is one that will not be forgotten in a hurry by some street children in Calabar, Cross River State.
The special Christmas was made possible by the kind gesture of the wife of the Cross River State Chief of Staff to Governor Bassey Otu, Associate Professor Virginia Ironbark, who took to the street of Lemna to put smiles on the faces of destitute children eating from crumps.
Lemna is a community in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of the state, where refuse is dumped. Not only were smiles on their faces, but their Christmas was “merry” alongside the dump site workers.
The outreach marked by warm and compassion greases the season – love, drawing attention to the harsh living conditions around the dump site and was greeted with excitement. Many of the children who roam the streets depend on scavenging and related activities at the dump for their daily survival.
